Cocktail Saturday: After The Gold Rush

Those old school cocktails have always been my favorite.  When the grown ups were drinking Whiskey Sours, I always wanted one. I managed to snag the whiskey soaked maraschino cherry/orange slice combo impaled on the ubiquitous plastic sword and that was good enough back then.

Nowadays, I still enjoy the drink, but last night mixologist and politico extraordinnaire, Rachel Maddow, offered a twist to the old stand by.  It involved some story about honey badgers that I don't remember - hence the honey in the recipe - but I don't know what she was talking about because she had me at bourbon.

It's called The Gold Rush and I don't really remember that part either.  Only that it's very good and a little different - in a good way.  It's a smooth sweetness.

Ingredients:

2 oz bourbon
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz honey syrup

To make honey syrup:

2 parts hot water
1 part honey

Stir until honey dissolves

In a shaker filled with ice, combine bourbon, lemon juice and honey syrup and shake until chilled.  Pour into high ball glass over ice.

I think Neil Young probably enjoys one of these...

  1. I don't drink. Ever, but you just reminded me I tasted this drink when I was a kid and I used to steal the cherry too.
